Sea transport in the logistics industry is divided into several types and uses various means of transport to transport various types of cargo and people safely and on time to specific places around the world. However, before the goods get on the ship – they must be delivered to the port, undergo inspection and at the same time be placed in special sea containers.
What are the types of sea transport?
Sea transport is one of the cheapest types of transport and significantly facilitates international trade.
- cabotage transport – includes the transport of goods between seaports in the same country. This type of transport can also be divided into small and large cabotage. The first is carried out within one sea, and the second – has a wider range, because it covers several seas.
- coastal transport – concerns the transport of goods along the sea coasts, e.g. between seaports located in one country.
- liner transport – shipping includes ships carrying out sea transport on so-called regular routes.
- inland transport – is transport carried out using inland navigation vessels, which transport people or cargo to the largest container ports.
- international transport, i.e. transoceanic – is carried out in several countries over long distances and these types of ships are intended for the transport of large loads.
What is sea freight?
Sea freight is otherwise a fee in sea transport, which is charged for the implementation of cargo transport from one port to the destination port. The amount of sea freight is strictly dependent on the size of the transported cargo and the total weight.
Types of means of sea transport
In international sea transport, cargo is transported using various types of means of transport. Means of sea transport are, in other words, floating units, which are divided into various categories in terms of construction and purpose.
In international sea transport, the following types of means of transport are used in terms of construction and purpose as well as the type of transported cargo:
- container ship – is nothing more than a container ship that delivers cargo to the destination. On board the container ship there are sea containers that are used to store various types of cargo.
- tanker – enables safe transport of liquid substances, e.g. natural gas, crude oil, various types of chemicals.
- general cargo ship – is a type of general cargo ship that is used to transport the smallest substances, but also liquid and so-called dry ones, which due to their specificity are often uncountable.
- tanker – enables the transport of large loads, e.g. tankers containing liquid and often harmful substances, e.g. liquid gases, various types of substances with a liquid consistency.
- bulk carrier – bulk carriers transport loose cargo, which due to their specificity do not require packaging. Loading such substances is very easy and does not require additional devices. Transport of dry and liquid substances is most often carried out using a bulk carrier. A bulk carrier allows transporting large dry loads, e.g. coal or iron, refrigerated ones such as frozen food and bulk loads, heavy ones such as wood.
- passenger – ships that serve mainly to transport people.
